Relaxing Saturday

Today, Graham and I took a day to catch up on a few errands and other non-stressful events. We got up at a leisurely pace, had breakfast together, played with the cat, and then headed to the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain to see the lilacs. The arboretum has an incredibly large amount of lilac bushes of all shapes, sizes, and colors. (Unfortunately, we forgot our camera, so we don’t have any shots to share with you.) We had a terrific time wandering around and sniffing at the flowers, and also seeing other people do the same. The cutest part was the little girl and her dad who were near us for quite awhile as we walked along. The girl kept asking her dad about the different kinds of lilacs, and he would read her the scientific name on the bush’s tag, and she would invariably say, “I like that one.” At one point, she pointed into the grass at some small yellow flowers and said, “I like those, what are those” and her dad replied, “those are weeds.” Very cute.

While there, we also saw an interesting sight: the largest dog I ever seen (I mean, he was ENORMOUS, the size of a small pony) and a small dog (a shiatsu) who ran up to the large dog and proceeded to scratch at its sides frantically. The large dog didn’t seem to mind this–in fact, the large dog seemed to be the calmest, most laid back animal I’ve ever seen. The two proceeded to play, with the large dog being really careful and gentle and goofy-looking, and it was just…I’m not sure how to describe it. Surreal and rather hilarious.  A small crowd actually gathered around the dogs, laughing just as hysterically as we were to see such utterly mismatched playmates.

We also went to Home Depot to get some gardening supplies for me, and to the grocery store to get some grub. Uneventful but rather pleasant errands, after such a crazy month.

Unfortunately,  I still have a paper to write, so alas, this period of quiet relaxation and lack of intellectual stimulation will end tomorrow morning. But it was great while it lasted! Hope you all had a terrific weekend as well. (Well, for most people the weekend isn’t over, but Graham and I only get one day off a week…just one of the many joys of grad school.)

One Response to “Relaxing Saturday”

  1. CB and G! So in my current state I have been able to catch up on your blog. Just a few notes: the flowers are amazing!
I miss you guys terribly and can’t wait for you guys to come and visit. Lucy is possibly the oddest mixture of the devil and the cutest cat ever! Don’t let school get you down too much. I’d love to be walking around campus right now. Seriously- not walking is a drag. LOVE YOU!
